Unit—A

1. Explain any two of the following with reference to the context : 8×2=16

(a) Alas, she hath no other cause of anguish But Tereus’ love, on her by strong hand wroken, Wherein she suffering, all her spirits languish; Full womanlike complains her will was broken.

(b) He was married and added five children to the population, Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation. And our teachers report that he never interfered with their education. Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd :

(c) “For if I should,” said he, Bestow this jewel also on my creature, He would adore my gifts instead of me, And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature; So both should losers be.

2. Answer any two of the following questions : 8×2=16

(a) The compelling theme of the poem, The Darkling Thrush, is ‘triumph of hope over despair’. Discuss.

(b) Do you agree with Sir Philip Sidney when he says to Philomela that “there is juster cause of plainful sadness” in the poem, The Nightingale? Give justification for your answer.

(c) In the light of the poem, The Pulley, do you think God was justified in his reluctance to give away the Blessing of Rest unconditionally to man? Explain.
